Plans for September

Friday 24th July 2020

Dear Parents and Carers,

Re: Plans for September

As we reach the end of the school year I would like to thank you all for your ongoing support particularly during the last few months. It has been wonderful to welcome the children back to school over this half term and although it has only been for a short time, the children have really enjoyed and benefitted from being back together with their friends and teachers.

In September we look forward to welcoming everyone back to school full time. However, in line with DfE guidance we will be making some changes to the organisation of our school day to ensure that we minimise the risk of spreading any infection and to keep our children, parents and staff as safe as possible. Many of the systems we have put into place since the whit holiday will continue but have been reviewed and adapted to allow for all children to return.

Drop off and collection

We will continue to stagger the drop off and pick up times to avoid too many people on the premises at the same time. The length of the school day will remain the same with key stage 2 having a slightly shorter lunch of 60 minutes instead of 65 minutes. To ensure a smooth arrival and collection system it is essential that children are collected and dropped off on time. If children arrive early there will be too many families waiting at the front of school or queuing at the gate. Please help us to prevent this by arriving and leaving at the allocated time. The one way systems in and out of the key stage 1 and 2 gates will continue. School will no longer close at 1pm on a Friday.

Classroom organisation and routines

The children will remain in their usual class of 30 but will mix as a year group bubble at play times, lunchtimes and for curriculum activities where appropriate.

In the year 2 - 6 classrooms, children’s tables will be arranged in rows with two children per table. We will continue to rotate our pairings regularly so the children sit with different peers. In early years and year 1, the children will access continuous provision areas and will not be expected to sit in rows.

Staggered break times and lunch times will continue with each year group playing out or eating lunch at different times.

Break times will take place on the field every day. Therefore we would like all children to bring a pair of labelled wellies in a drawstring bag. These should be kept in school so the children can wear them if the grass is wet.

From September, all children including early years and key stage 1 will need to bring a healthy snack for the morning break. Nuts or nut products are not allowed as there are many children with allergies in the school.  Chocolate, sweets, biscuits and crisps are also not allowed. All children will also need to bring a labelled water bottle. Please ensure this is washed at home daily.

Lunchtimes will take place in the hall and dining hall, a year group at a time. The tables and benches will be cleaned down between year groups. Taylor Shaw will continue to provide grab bags for those children who have school meals. Grab bags will regularly include hot freshly cooked food as an alternative to sandwiches. Those children who bring a packed lunch may now bring their lunch in a lunch box. Please ensure lunch boxes are thoroughly cleaned on a daily basis. Before or after eating lunch the children will play out on either the playground or the field in their year group bubble.

On PE days children will be allowed to come to school wearing their PE kit. Please ensure that your child is wearing the correct PE kit. Please see the general guidance in the school handbook https://www.didsburyroad.stockport.sch.uk/year-group-handbooks/ for details of what the PE uniform is. In September, the class teachers will notify you which days the children will need to wear their kit instead of school uniform. Nursery and Reception children do not require a PE kit.

Class teachers will also inform you of the organisation for changing reading books and visiting the school library.

Breakfast and After school provision

Please contact Elm Cottage if you require breakfast and after school club provision. Mr Dixon will contact parents/carers about after school sports clubs available for year group bubbles in September. We will be discussing other extra-curricular clubs with our external providers in the new academic year.

For further information regarding the DfE guidance for schools in the autumn term please see

Early in the new school year I will write again regarding our school development priorities and our new school vision for the future. I will also provide further information about how we intend to reconnect the curriculum and support the children pastorally following the school closure. We are currently advertising our Deputy Headteacher vacancy and will be recruiting for this position in the autumn term.

Finally I’m sure you will join me in sending best wishes to those children, staff and families leaving us this academic year. We wish you all well for the future. Thank you also for the generous staff gifts from children and parents, it is very thoughtful and kind of you.

On behalf of the staff and governors, I wish you all a lovely summer and look forward to welcoming the children back to school on Thursday 3rd September.

Yours sincerely

Mrs Gemma Collins
